The Cooper-Hewitt Museum exhibition ''L'Art de Vivre: Decorative Arts and Design in France 1789-1989" (March 30-August 6, 1989), celebrated the bicentennial of the French Revolution through an exploration of French decorative arts since the war. More than 600 objects were exhibited, offering a view of the silver, glass, textiles, wallpaper, furniture, jewelry and fashion that typify the spirit of France. As explained by David Refere McFadden, curator of decorative arts at the Cooper-Hewitt, ''This show is meant to give people an opportunity to enjoy a two-century-long tradition of excellence in design and craftsmanship." Along with illustrations of the art pieces included in the exhibition, this exhibition catalog includes essays on French decorative arts, home life, dining, fashion, and design.
