Scully, Sean, 1945-, Photography
Sean Scully (1945-) is known for his work as an abstract painter, photographer, watercolorist, and printmaker. His work has been exhibited in museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Albright-Knox Gallery, the Galleria de Arte Moderna, and Gallerie Jeu de Paume. His work is influenced by the American artists Pollock and Rothko and the European figures of Mondrian and Matisse; how to combine these differing influences has become the primary question of his work. This catalog represents Alexander and Bonin’s exhibition “Sean Scully: Prints and Photographs” (December 2, 2003 – January 10, 2004), covering twenty-five years of his photographic work. This title, the first retrospective publication of Scully’s photographs, includes images of ten anonymous doors in Sienna, Italy, as well as recent images from the favelas of Brazil. Readers will find essays by Arthur Danto and Mia Fineman, which explore the relationship between abstraction, nature, figuration, and the built environment that are so prevalent in Sully’s art. Also included is an interview by Edward Lucie-Smith.
