The theme of Pictorial Alphabets is that of drawings contained within or combined with the letters of the alphabet. The author presents a wide range of ways to combine letters with drawing, with the primary criteria for inclusion that of ease of availability / reproduction. Secondarily, the author stresses that the letters and drawing should both be of the same design. Most of the pages selected are from children’s books in the middle and late nineteenth century, and are anonymous examples of popular art in their time.
