The theme of Pictorial Alphabets is that of drawings contained within or combined with the letters of the alphabet. The author presents a wide range of ways to combine letters with drawing, with the primary criteria for inclusion that of ease of availability / reproduction. Secondarily, the author stresses that the letters and drawing should both be of the same design. Most of the pages selected are from children's books in the middle and late nineteenth century, and are anonymous examples of popular art in their time. This book contains specimen lines from the original foundry types in the Morgan Press Collection from 1786-1960. From Introduction: "Morgan Press is a modern printing plant equipped with new cylinder and platen presses for fine color and black-and-white printing. Our composition department includes a linotype with modern fonts and the modern foundry types frequently used. In addition, there is the usual folding and binding equipment and hot stamping presses... Here is a unique type specimen book that has been in the making for over 20 years. Many fonts of types, borders, ornaments, and line cuts have come from printing plants all over the country. Most of the 19th century foundry types have gone as "old lead" into the melting pots, but we were able to save nearly 2,000 fonts from this fate. You will find exclusive specimens in this catalog that are not available anywhere else. Over 1,500 selected fonts of early and modern types will be included." The types are divided into three classes. The first grouping includes the romans, clarendons, gothics, Celtics, antiques, and others. The second depicts the ornamentation from 40 or more foundries including Crayonette, Karnac, Kismet, etc. [Introduction cut off, so the third section is not explained]. Also included is an index (at the front) to the typefaces included.
