Book design, History of the book
This is the catalog for the Contemporary Danish Book Art exhibition held at the Thomas J. Watson Library of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, circa 1986. From Foreword: “A book is usually valued mainly for its content… but three other elements may make a book a treasure also coveted by bibliophiles and art museums: the printing, the illustrations, and the binding…the three supportive elements are represented at this exhibition by three Danish artists, each prominent in his own field. The printer, Mr. Poul Kristensen, has a long career as one of the pioneers in technical-aesthetic printing. His planning, lay-out and choice of types are marked by vision and close attention to details. The illustrator, Mr. Helge Ernest, receiver of high international diplomas, is famous both for large scale paintings and smaller graphics. His work as illustrator of prestigious books has won him widespread acclaim. The art bookbinder, Mr. Ole Olsen, has received high honors and gained international fame for his remarkable style and technique, which combine the best traditions of Danish handicraft with modern design and professional know-how of the highest order.” Also included are a list of technical terms and biographical notes on the artists.
