This is the catalog produced as a result of the Making Artist Books Today workshop held in Poestenkill, NY from August 18-23, 1979.
From Prefaces: “In August ’97, initated by Gunnar A. Kaldewey, book artists and several people closely related to artist’s books as museum expert, librarian and collector met on the estate of the Kaldewey Press in Poestenkill, scattered with studios for papermaking, typesetting, and printing. Five days of presentations, surveys and commentaries as well as extensive inspections of specimen from each of the presses lead to long and fruitful discussions about the different philosophies of the book artists, touching as well many questions of technical finesses and aesthetic devices… the next step was to plan an international traveling exhibition. The work of five presses (which we call the Rocket Five) from Paris, New York, Tampa/Florida, Santa Barbara/California, and Bogota/Columbia will tour to ten cities in South and North America, to Europe and Japan. For these fifty exhibitions this book will provide the theoretical information.”
