From Preface: “The core text is the press anatomy section, which represents my twenty years of experience as a studio letterpress printer operating various Vandercook models and ten years teaching ‘Vandercook Maintenance’ at book arts centers and universities in much of the United States. The introduction and appendices touch on Vandercook history and attempts to reconcile and expand upon articles by O.F. Duensing, Louis Flader, Gerald Lange, Harold E. Sterne and Fred Williams.”
While the focus is on Vandercooks, also included are findings about other makes, as well as some of the human story related to these presses from their original commercial purpose to their status as machines of artistic production. A sense of the early years of Vandercook & Sons has also been developed throughout the book. Also included are a list of resources, a glossary of key terms, and a bibliography.
