Bookbinding
Buffum was trained by F.P. Hathaway, binder for twenty years at the Boston Athenaeum and later in charge of the bindery at the John Carter Brown Library in Providence, R.I., and in decorative tooling and lettering with gold leaf by Charles McLeish, connected with the Doves Bindery of Mr. Cobden-Sanderson at Hammersmith. As Buffum states, “Mr. Hathaway’s chief aim was to produce bindings which would last for many years, and his anxiety was to do the work in the way which was best for the volume in hand, and not merely to produce a decorative effect. In the following pages I have tried to record his method, hoping it will further good workmanship in the craft which he loved.” Chapters cover the topics of equipment and materials; preparation, sewing, and end papers; forwarding; finishing; and loose-backed books and other kinds of bookbindings. Also included are a section on knots, notes and helpful suggestions for bookbinders, and an index. Signed copy 102 of 500.
