This is the catalog for the John Eric Broaddus exhibition at the Yale University Library from April 25-June 25, 2001. From Introduction: “In particle physics spin ½ is a term used to describe the discovery that reality has to spin one way, and back the other way in order to be fully experienced, therefore a second look is always advisable. This quote from Broaddus’s edition SPIN ½ evokes the nature of this exhibition and catalog. The aim is to show the continuity of vision through the range of work created by John Eric Broaddus. The process of collecting, describing, and showcasing this work has caused me to take a second glance, and a third, and a fourth. The work of Broaddus cannot be fully experienced in one look. Each page of his books contains multiple layers, both on the page in paint, and physically, through the cut-outs. The reality of the page changes as the reader turns it. New incarnations of the space are created as the cut-outs frame something other than before. Broaddus’s costumes play with our notion of everyday reality, the world in which we live. Does such an incredibly visual creature, as Broaddus became when he donned his costumes, belong in this reality?
