From Preface: "Knowing something about the materials books are made of, how they are put together, how they are affected by their environment, and what their most vulnerable parts are, helps in knowing how to store, handle and display them properly and the things to do, and not to do, to prolong their life and maintain them in good condition. The needless damage caused by improper handling is easily avoided...Enough information on the guidelines and practices recommended by conservators for an interested reader to pursue this subject has been included, but has not been treated in any detail. Information is listed under as many headings as possible for easy reference. Products and publications mentioned in the text are listed in the chapter on Materials and Suppliers."
