Exhibition catalogs, Jewish history, life, and culture
From Introduction: "This exhibition expands the notion of Jews as being the 'People of the Book', to embrace the Jewish woman as a creative being who is also part of that People...Additionally, the exhibition itself allowed several of the women to do research, to find their 'cultural identity' which had been lost in the shuffle of generations of assimilations." From Foreword: "This exhibition joins three strands of particular interest to the FAU Libraries: Women's Studies, Judaica, and the book arts. We have long made Women's Studies a special area of acquisition and visiting scholars have complimented us on the strength of our collections. Our Judaica collections are the largest in Florida, and feature one of the strongest collections of Yiddish-language materials in the world. Our Arthur and Mata Jaffe Collection of Books as Aesthetic Objects is one of the most important collections of artists' books in the country, and its holdings include works by some of the same artists displayed here. It was natural, then, that we would take a special interest in the 'Women of the Book' exhibit, and seek to enhance it." Items represented in the catalog appear in full-color, with a 1-2 paragraph explanation by the artist of the meaning behind the piece. Artist bios are included.
