"The Leather Conservation Centre owes its inception to the late John Waterer, RDI, FSA, FIIC, a recognized authority on leather conservation. It is envisaged that in the near future the Centre will take up permanent residence in Hampton Court Palace, providing facilities for research, instruction and conservation to the museum, archeological and related fields. Before this takes place, however, it has been thought timely to publish a series of monographs which it is hoped will be of interest to conservators and archeologists. This first monograph gives in a concise form the basic structure and properties of leather" - Preface Topics covered include the fibrous structure of leather, structure of mammalian skins, variation in structure between animal types, variations in grain surface pattern, suede surfaces, variation in structure with location, variation in structure introduced by the processing, fibre structure and physical properties of the leather, corium structure and strength, the reaction of the fibre weave to movement of leather, and fibre structure influence on break. Detailed magnifications of the fiber structures are included throughout.
