"This is the third book by Philip Smith, and like its predecessors is intended to indicate the main directions in which book art is now developing in that area 'free from necessity'. The emphasis is placed on the exterior or overall aspect of the book as a visual and tactile object. No comprehensive theory and philosophy of bookbinding for the present age has been formulated, but in this short collection of writings on the subject an interim attempt is made to fill in some of the gaps left in his previous book, New Directions in Bookbinding, in advance of a new book of practical case histories at present being assembled for publication at a later date." - back matter
