The Abbey Newsletter was first issued in 1975 in New Carrollton, MD and was issued six times a year by editor Ellen McCrady. Starting with Volume five it began to have the subtitle: Bookbinding and Conservation. Starting with Volume 6 No 4 in 1982 the newsletter became affiliated with the Columbia University School of Library Science. This issue has a note which states: "Note: the Newsletter receives its mail at this address, but is not a part of Columbia University." Ellen McCrady received her certificate from Columbia in Preservation Administration and beginning with Volume 8, No. 1 lost her student status but continued to print the newsletter as affiliated with Columbia. McCrady then took a position as preservation Librarian at the Brigham Young University Library in 1984. Starting with Volume 8 No. 4 (1984) the newsletter changed affiliation to the Conservation Department of the Brigham Young University Library in Provo, Utah. Volume 10 No. 5 ( 1986) refers to the Harold B. Lee Library instead of the Conservation Department in Provo, Utah and also marks the start of a slightly altered typeface and design. Starting with Volume 9 No. 7 the newsletter started to be issued "six or more" times a year eventually settling on 8 times a year. Most issues list the number of subscribers which climbs from 250-1200. Ellen R. McCrady is also the author of North American Permanent Papers and Alkaline Paper Advocate. Issues contain news about prominent conservators and bookbinders, conferences, book reviews, job openings, supplies and tools. Articles are written on topics relating to bookbinding and conservation. Some issues contain lists of useful addresses, separately printed supplements, and indexes for entire volumes.
