The Society of Scribes is a non-profit organization located in New York City founded in 1974 to preserve and enhance the practice, appreciation, and knowledge of calligraphy and its related arts. The Society of Scribes is administrated by a Board of Governors elected annually at the General Meeting in February.
The newsletter, distributed to members quarterly since 1976, contains information about events, workshops, competitions, letters, obituaries, and some advertisements as well as articles and artwork. Other publications of The Society of Scribes include the SOS Journal and directory. All of the titles prior to Volume 17 are titled Society of Scribes Newsletter and thereafter are titled NEWSoS the Newsletter of the Society of Scribes.
