The Society of Scribes is a non-profit organization located in New York City founded in 1974 to preserve and enhance the practice, appreciation, and knowledge of calligraphy and its related arts. The Society of Scribes is administrated by a Board of Governors elected annually at the General Meeting in February. The journal, first published in 1985, has been published periodically with irregular frequency. The Journal includes articles relating to calligraphy and lettering and also includes the works from a juried competition entitled: Calligraphy and Lettering in the Graphic Arts. Other publications of The Society of Scribes include the SOS Newsletter (NewSoS), a limited edition journal entitled Letters from New York and the SOS Directory.
