Bookbinding, Letterpress printing, Artists' books, Typography, Calligraphy, Book industries and trade--History, Kirshenbaum, Sandra
Started in 1975 in San Francisco as a quarterly publication for the art of the book by Sandra Kirshenbaum. Fine Print covers a variety of subjects including bookbinding, letterpress printing, small presses, artists' books, calligraphy, and hand made paper. Many issues highlight printmaking techniques from around the world. Most editions contain loose inserts of classifieds, news, events, classes, and sometimes prints. These inserts are usually titled "Fine Print II" with different date ranges of coverage but are meant to cover the time elapsed in between issues. Each issue opens to an advertisement from Mohawk Paper Mills describing the paper that each issue is printed on. The papers and oral history transcripts relating to Fine Print are held by The Bancroft Library of the University of California at Berkeley.

"The celebrated San Francisco-based journal Fine Print: The Review for the Arts of the Book (1975-1990) dealt broadly not only in its titular subject matter, the contemporary book arts, but also in the history of books and printing, typography, bookbinding, and related areas. Its many contributors included Martin Antonetti, John Dreyfus, Paul Hayden Duensing, Colin Franklin, Steven Heller, Janet Ing, Paul Needham, Stan Nelson, and Benjamin Vorst. The journal suddenly ceased publication (with volume 16 no. 3) in 1990 because of the unexpected ill health of its founding editor, Sandra Kirshenbaum." - Rare Book School

"Sandy's editorial policy, from which she never deviated, was stated in the first issue of Fine Print: 'to present a lively and informed report of the current scene in all its diversity.' She interpreted this ambitious policy to encompass all of the arts of the book. Further, she attempted to integrate all of the arts of the book, first with an expanded coverage of calligraphy, bookbinding, papermaking, wood engraving and type design, the latter subject increasingly devoted to digitization and computer-generated types, along with continued full coverage of fine printing, and second with broad international coverage. The latter goal was most brilliantly achieved in the special issues surveying particular countries about which little was known at the time in the English-speaking world." -Robert D. Harlan.
