From the introduction to Catalogue #6 Livres d'Artiste "Golden Legend, Inc. is proud to present a selection of important Livres d'Artiste which it has in stock. A form of book generally associated with the publishers and printers of France, the Livre d'Artiste continues in many ways that long tradition of the French Livre de Luxe which began in the middle ages. To understand the Livre d'Artiste, one must recognize that the work is created to be experienced rather than simply read. All parts of the book have been designed and printed with immaculate care in an effort to make the Livre d'Artise (the book of the artist) an object to be admired for its beauty rather than read for its text alone. The discursive text printed on the pages of the Livre d'Artiste is only one item of importance and sometimes of little importance at that. Much more important are the bindings, plates, hand-made paper and other elements of beautiful bookmaking. In this respect the Livre d'Artiste shows a direct relationship to the medieval treasure manuscripts (done in France and elsewhere in Europe) with their bindings of the whitest ivory studded with gems; leaves made of the finest unbound skins; and initials, miniatures and borders painted in gold, purples and colors until the homiletic text receded into shadow before the rainbow of book decoration. There is a comparison, moreover, between the Livre d'Artiste and the great natural history works of 18th and 19th century France and elsewhere whose plates are spectacularly colored and treated with varnish to heighten the effect, but whose texts are not particularly important."
