Drawing / SVA was intended to be published twice a year. The journal was the result of a class taught by Paul Davis as part of the MFA Illustration as a Visual Essay Program. The first issue was devoted to the lyrical work and legacy of Weaver, who passed away in 1994. Only three issues of Drawing / SVA were ever published.
This issue displays the "real life" artwork of the students of Robert Weaver at the School of Visual Arts. In his class "Illustration as Visual Essay," begun in 1984, Weaver encouraged his students to draw from "real life in motion" instead of "still-life models," and this publication exhibits the culmination of their work.
