The story of 'The Image Multiplied' begins in the Renaissance and culminates in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction. It is interesting that this five hundred year history seems to exist as it were in tension between two opposing narrative streams. One is an extroverted narrative of progress, the technological change led by artists and craftsmen who were, in their cultural milieu, the leaders of scientific and technical expertise. Their interest, as members of a glowingly self-conscious elite, was to spread their own fame, glory and prospects of employment through the 'civilized' world. The other narrative is that of Art History, itself an invention of the Renaissance, which distinguished the artists as a genius and the work of art at as a record of conjunction between human mind and amenable material."-- from foreword by John Murdoch Includes index.
