"The [British Museum's] collection of Scandinavian prints and drawings is of a more recent creation, stemming in the first instance from a group of 143 etchings by Danish artists of the first half of the nineteenth century, the so called golden Age, that was bought by Museum in 1859...Neither the selection nor the arrangement of the entries within the text was ever intended to defer to individual national identities, or to adumbrate precisely the history of art in respective countries; printmaking is in any case too capricious a vehicle for the latter exercise once it is divorced from a purely reproductive role. The purpose of the exhibition and more particularly of the catalogue is to illuminate some of the issues common to all the Scandinavian countries, both social and artistic, and to demonstrate their relationship to the rest of Europe."--preface Published to accompany an exhibition held at the British Museum, Jan. 24-Apr. 20, 1997.
