"Ukiyo--"pictures of the floating world"--was a school of popular art which recorded life, fashions, and entertainments of Japan's urban population in the seventeenth, eighteenth, and early nineteenth centuries. During this period Japan was almost completely isolated under the repressive policies of the Tokugawa Shoguns. Ukiyoe paintings, prints, and books therefor depicted a society unknown to the world.
Over 250 of the finest works of this school are illustrated here,e very one in color...Every item is fully described and explained. There is an introduction on the history of Ukiyoe art, a glossary of special terms and short biographies of artists.
