"The text of What Beast? is a very free translation into English of a poem that I wrote in French more than twenty years ago about a cat of mine, a formidable mouser. In translation, which took a long time to get right, the poem is no longer necessarily about a cat dreaming about catching mice, especially with the accompanying imagery. The text was first embroidered in off-white onto a fabric printed with leaves in black and gray. I fused a chiffon print of a detail of a Renaissance painting over that. The effect is somewhat dreamlike. It is not entirely clear just who is asleep and who is awake, if anyone is, which seems about right"--Artist's website.
