John F. Fleming and Priscilla Juvelis, New York and Boston, first edition, 1983, 1983. Edition of 750 copies for sale and 100 hors de commerce. Cloth, gilt cover-title, 4to, 29 cm, ca. 200 pp, many plates (some colour, some tipped-in). 219 items. This is an unpriced sale catalogue of "what is undoubtedly the finest collection extant of livres d’artistes,.some of which are in bindings specially commissioned from the finest craftsmen in that field." which was initially offered for sale en bloc. The collection principally reflects the taste of Carlos Scherrer, who bought extensively in Paris in the 1920s and 1930s and was Paul Bonet's major patron, and another collector who acquired part of Scherrer's collection and added to it significantly. Among some 120 artists represented are : Pierre Bonnard (7 items), George Braque ( 6), Marc Chagall (5), Raoul Dufy (5), Giorgio De Chirico (Calligrammes), Aristide Maillol (6), Henri Matisse (6), Pablo Picasso (10), with Cezanne, Cocteau, and Miro represented by one or two items each. Some 30 binders are represented including Paul Bonet (6 items) Creuzevault (4 ), René Kieffer (11), and Leprêtre (10), with Rose Adler and Ersé among others represented by a single item. Bibliographical descriptions by Peter A. Wick ; introduction by Eleanor M. Garvey ; photographs by Mark Sexton. Includes bibliography and indexes.
