Catalogue of an exhibition held at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Sept. 18 to Nov. 22, 1970.
"Suzuki Harunobu played a pivotal role in the evolution of Japanese printmaking during its great period--the last half of the 18th and the first years of the 19th century. In the final years of his relatively brief life, he opened up a new dimension of expression in that tradition of graphics by introducing many colors to what had essentially been a monochromatic art form. Thus in honoring Harunobu on the two hundredth anniversary of his death, the Philadelphia Museum of Art not only creates a broader awareness of a brilliantly expressive master but also recognizes an extraordinary moment in the history of graphic techniques.
Contains ten color and 126 black and white plates.
Includes bibliography and a short glossary of Japanese words.
