From the preface, "The History of the study of the Carracci Family prints is as checkered as that of their paintings. Contemporary sources discussed engravings only if extremely important (Malvasia), and a catalogue raisonne did not appear until the early nineteenth century (Bartsch), two hundred years removed from the artists' lives. An attempt to rectify the lack of a modern catalogue of their prints was made in 1965 (Calvesi/Casale), but the results were less than satisfactory. It is evident that, at this time, a catalogue raisonne of their engravings and etchings is overdue. This fully illustrated catalogue is an attempt to fill that lacuna in Carracci studies."
