Abstract: "This volume provides detailed, step-by-step instruction for Spencerian Script, with hundreds of examples of both standard and alternate forms for lowercase letters. It includes both standard capital letterforms and a wide assortment of flourished Spencerian capitals. It is the most thorough instructional text on Spencerian available today. In addition, this copiously illustrated volume discusses the history of penmanship in America and includes the story of Platt Rogers Spencer, his children, and their Spencerian System of Writing. It delves into the Golden Age of Ornamental Penmanship in America (1850-1925) and the art of studio engrossing, and discusses Austin Norman Palmer, who greatly influenced the teaching of handwriting in America in the twentieth century. It ends with a Penmanship Hall of Fame, with portraits and/or biographical sketches for over 100 masters of the pen, and numerous fact-filled appendices."
