"The project "Odorant Peatlands" ("Turberas Olorosas" in Spanish) was born as an iteration of a prolonged, entangled, and decentralized engagement with global Peatlands initiated by the collective Ensayos. Ensayos is a collective research practice centered on de-extinction, multispecies dialogues, coastal health, and peatland protection. Initiated on the archipelago of Tierra del Fuego in Chile in 2010, Ensayos (meaning “inquiries”, “essays” or “rehearsals” in English) first focused solely on the ecopolitical issues impacting the Fuegian archipelago and its inhabitants. Now, other archipelagos have come into view, with research “pods” growing in Norway, New York, and Australia.
The first time some of these scents were shared with the public was as part of the Chilean Pavilion at the Venice Biennale's exhibition Turba Tol Hol-Hol Tol, where Ensayos grouped a series of interdisciplinary collaborators (from artists and ecologists to indigenous activists) to create a multi-sensory environment representing peatlands. Before you, you can find a prolongation of this initial engagement by the title "Odorant Peatlands." This compact edition brings together the smells of the peatlands and swamplands of: Karokynká, Tierra del Fuego, Chile (Taaspen); Bog Hollow, New York, USA (Rich); Bogerudmyra, Oslo, Norway (Wolves in the Mire); and Minjerribah, Quandamooka Country, Australia (Jalo Gaba). They summon: the smells of wet earth and Sphagnum magellanicum (Taaspen); of beavers witnessing ecological destruction in North America (Rich); of wet animal fur and Scandinavian pines (Wolves in the Mire); and of coastal Australian flora supported by ancestral practices of slow burns (Jalo Gaba)."--Artist's statement

"The design of this edition alludes to bog bridges – uneven structures that force us to break with directionality in order to engage with the zig-zagging epistemologies of peatlands as we approach them. It also winks at the uneven geographies and lines of productive mis/communication that our boggy engagements entailed in the processes of distant collaboration. Similarly, the translation processes across English and Spanish were not conducted linearly, but multi-directionally, with an emphasis on making a distinct text in each language that held the poetic essence of itself and emergently became a new creation.

This publication is born on the shoulders of the tentacular network of collective research pods by the name of Ensayos. Some of the scents appearing here were first shown at the collective exhibition Turba Tol Hol-Hol Tol at the Chilean Pavilion of La Biennale di Venezia in 2022. While this particular iteration coalesces around collaboration of an olfactory nature, it honors every contributor (human and non-human) that has shaped this work since its germination in 2010.
