"I came up with the idea to go through my family and personal photographic archive and select one image for each year of my life.
This process provided a space for me to begin reflecting, year by year.
I decided to step back even further and to draw the images digitally making the figures in the images silhouettes and stripping away unnecessary details while preserving the context.
I realized that the black and white images drew felt too stark, so I decided to print them as tin types, a photographic process from 1853 known for its low tonal range and unexpected artifacts. The tintypes infused the images with a sense of time and memory that felt more aligned with what I was exploring and wanted to convey.
The images in this book are the result of these efforts to reflect on my life at
60. Family (blood and chosen), relationships, community, growth, sexuality, photography, self-expression, travel, love, and loss are the words that come to mind when I look at the 60 images. As I write this, I am 63. Time passes and my life continues on." --Artist's description.
