Dante Alighieri, 1265-1321, Phillips, Tom, 1937-, Illustrations
Tom Phillip's production of 138 prints illustrating Dante's Inferno took him seven years to make. This work was first published as a limited edition livre d'artiste, the original deluxe version of which retails at £10,000. In this popular edition, the text of Phillips translation is faithfully reproduced, accompanied by the full set of illustrations. The secondary text occuring in most of the images acts as a lyrical counterpart to Dante's themes. Also included in this edition are the artist's detailed notes on the genesis of each image and the nature of its relevance to his and Dante's preoccupations. Signed by the artist. An exhibition including 12 (of 15) notebooks on the translation, images, and notes towards the images; 9 of Phillip's original screenprints; 4 limited edition copies of this work; and 2 original drawings was presented at the Center for Book Arts from April 3, 1986 - May 16, 1986.
